Action-packed gameplay with unique characters and colorful graphics
Not every level is equally good, but in some levels, you’ll have an absolute blast. Advance Guardian Heroes is a fun and action-packed side-scrolling beat 'em up, a port of the Sega Saturn game, if you’re familiar with it. The successful mix of hack-and-slash combat and RPG elements kept me thoroughly entertained, with a good number of characters, each with unique abilities.
The fights are fast-paced and the controls are relatively smooth for the GBA. The graphics are colorful and detailed for the time, although they’re not always consistent; some levels clearly look better than others. The multiplayer mode adds extra replay value. Unfortunately, the difficulty can sometimes be a bit too high, to the point of being frustrating.
If the quality had been more consistent throughout the game, this would have been an absolute gem. But as it stands, it’s still highly recommended.
